Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are at risk of being disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix over excessive plank wear.
Norris originally finished second and Piastri fourth, with Max Verstappen winning to close the gap to Norris to 42 points. However, after inspection of the cars post-race, the FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer flagged issues with both McLarens.
“The rearmost skid was measured on both cars according to the team’s legality documents submission in accordance with TD039 M, item 1.2 b) i),” Bauer’s report stated.
“The measured thickness was less than 9 mm on both cars, which is the minimum thickness required by TR Article 3.5.9 e).”
The matter has been referred to the stewards, with the usual penalty for breaching technical regulations being a disqualification.
Should the McLarens be disqualified, Verstappen will move level with Piastri and close to within 24 points of championship leader Norris heading into the final two rounds of the season in Qatar – where it’s a Sprint weekend – and Abu Dhabi.
